STANDARDS OF PRACTICE
ALIYAH MINHAG
In January of 2007, The Pelham Jewish Center changed its standard of practice with regard to aliyot in the synagogue. The synagogue now calls bnot kohen and bnot levi (women whose fathers are kohanim and leviim) up to the Torah for the kohen and levi aliyot, and has restricted the practice of joint aliyot to married couples on smachot, on specific joyous occasions, and even then has created a list of preferential ways for couples to be called to the Torah together.
